Bracketology: To Research or Not to Research

So this is the question I find myself facing every year when it comes time for March Madness: in choosing to complete a bracket, is it better to do some research or not?  Like I’ve stated before, basketball is not my number 1 sport.  I hear what’s going on by listening to SportsCenter in the morning, but I don’t keep up with what team is offended because it got seeded 13th instead of 6 or whatnot.

The first year I did a bracket, I did it just for myself to see how I would do.  I had paid extremely little attention to basketball.  And you know what? I rocked it out.  Several friends marveled at how I had correctly picked some upsets–based on gut feelings alone–and said I would have won their pool had I played.

So the next year, I thought, if I could do that good with no knowledge, think about how awesome I’d be if I did a little research!  So I looked at some prognosticators’ brackets and paid careful attention to the news.  The results were dismal.

So here I am, about to enter my company bracket for the first time, and I go back to the question: Should I research or not?  I think I’m going to go back to the ole gut reaction, which means I put UK down as winning it all.  After all, this makes sense to me; given that Bama football and UK basketball have such similar traditions and fan bases, it only makes sense that the year Bama strikes gold, UK should do so as well, right?  We’ll see if I’m right!
